IN MEMORIAM TUAM

IN MEMORIAN TUAM, BERTA!!!
Last Thursday one of the most highly-reputed Honduran voices was killed. Berta Caceres, a Lenca woman, who had been committed to several civic organizations from Honduras in favor of human rIghts, in particular, leading movements to support Indigenous dignity and environmental care for decades was shot at home. Her Central American country is shocked by this outstanding loss in such a barbaric way. The official version tries to justify this crime as a simple robbery case but the international community suspects that it’s a political murder. Unfortunately, this is a quite frequent type of event in one of the most world’s violent countries nowadays because their crime rates are devastating, to the extent that local authorities recognize that there are thirteen lethal victims a day in Honduras. In spite of this tragedy, Berta’s legacy is very important: she has tried to defend the most unfavourised people’s rights in one of the top poorest American countries. As well as she promoted campaigns against very powerful transnational companies such as the Chinese Sinohydro and some international institutions which supported their energetic projects. Besides she created, with her public demonstrations, a civil movement which put pressure on the authorities to preserve their country from unethical business practices. Poverty, corruption and violence are the three main enemies of this society but women and men as Berta have given their life in favour of a new country and a true chance of promotion for a wonderful people. She received the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2015. R.I.P. Juanma Glez Canales
